additions and alterations
Inspire. restore. transform.
Ford 3 replaced an existing glass conservatory with a new addition, transforming a space formerly overwhelmed with harsh sunlight into one that is not only functional for an artist, but also enriches the character of the house. High windows bring in soft, controlled light and promote the circulation of air through cross ventilation. A brise- soleil at the backyard entrance not only animates the façade, but also prevents direct sunlight from entering while retaining a view to the garden.
In awarding the prize, Bucks County AIA the design juror noted that “the new addition totally reverses the problems of the old conservatory, and –more than merely unobtrusively adding to the older house- it considerably enriches the character of the whole, inside and out. A well-designed arts studio, it also clearly has the character to function as a social space invitingly connected house to garden.”
