JOHNSON EDUCATIONAL CENTER

D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST

D & R Greenway Land Trust is Central New Jersey’s regional land preservation organization.  It was founded in 1989 to protect lands along the Delaware & Raritan Canal and the waterways that flow through the surrounding area.  They have expanded their focus over time, but continue to permanently preserve watershed lands and large-scale landscapes, thereby preventing the loss of open space to development. In 2001, D & R Greenway led a unique public/private partnership that includes state, county and local government, individual contributors, and private organizations to preserve 53 acres of the former Robert Wood Johnson estate as a township park now known as Greenway Meadows Park. Two barns on the property, circa 1900, were maintained by D & R Greenway.  The larger of the two barns became the Johnson Education Center, D & R Greenway Land Trust’s new home.  The mission of the Johnson Education Center is to strengthen the capacity of local governments; grassroots organizations; and state, county, and nonprofit partners to protect and effectively manage land.  To this end, the Center houses educational spaces and resources for use by other organizations in addition to office space for the D & R Greenway staff. The barn was restored and adapted to accommodate the needs of the D & R Greenway Land Trust.  Offices were located on the ground level where windows existed and the lecture hall and board room were located in the former hayloft.  The lobby was in the existing two-story space that had previously been used to access the hayloft.  To reflect the client’s commitment to sustainability, environmentally friendly materials and energy efficient building systems were used throughout. Construction was completed in late April 2006.
